2 squares unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup milk
2 cups sugar
dash of salt
2 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
Place chocolate and milk in heavy saucepan. Stir constantly over very low hheat until smooth and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Add sugar and salt; stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved and mixture boils. Continue boiling, without stirring, until small amout of mixture forms a soft ball in cold water.
Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla. Do not stir. Cool to lukewarm. Beat until mixture begins to lose its gloss and holds its shape. Pour at once into buttered 8x4-inch loaf pan. Cool until set; then cut into squares. Let stand in pan until firm. Makes 1 pound or about 1 1/2 dozen pieces.
